This brilliant high-school junior is taking three history classes, with dreams of becoming
a biblical scholar. Along with writing narratives and playing the occasional game of Airsoft with
his family, Suede Van Komen loves to study the past. He is currently taking classes in World
Religions, AP U.S. History, and World Mythology. He especially loves learning about Greek
mythology. Suede tells us that “Greek mythology is interesting because we have the most
information on the Greeks, unlike many other mythologies.”
For students considering classes in the field of history, Suede has some suggestions.
“World Religions is a great class with an amazing teacher, Ms. Carlton-Johnson, and I definitely
recommended it,” he says. He mentions that World Religions and Mythology are easier, low
commitment options, where AP U.S. history offers an opportunity for a challenge.
“History is more or less the study of what has happened and what will happen again,”
Suede says when asked why he finds it interesting. He loves to learn about all times and places,
from the middle ages to the roman empire. His favorite, however, is the study of biblical times.
Suede hopes for a profession as a biblical scholar.
In addition to learning about history, Suede spends his time creative writing. He is also
an accomplished player of Airsoft, which is a team-based recreation shooting sport. Suede Van
Komen is a perfect example of someone who’s dedicated enough to put in the work and follow
his passions.
