MIDVALE, UT- Ongoing vandalism at Hillcrest High School has led to the closure of a frequently used student bathroom near the weight room. The single-stall facility on the second floor is currently out of service after the door was reportedly removed and the sink left damaged.
The bathroom’s proximity to the gym made it a convenient option for many students, but it will remain closed indefinitely pending repairs. School officials have not yet provided a timeline for when the facility will reopen.
Hillcrest administrator Andrew Yawn, said the sink probably broke because someone pushed or leaned on it too hard. “This time it’s getting a steel-reinforced bracket,” He said. “But it’s going to take longer to fix.” He also said it’s hard to find out who did it because there are no cameras in the bathrooms. “We rely on students to tell us when something is broken,” Yawn said. “This is your building. You go to school here, and we want it to stay nice.”
Staff members check the bathrooms as often as they can, but there are too many to monitor all the time. “We can’t be everywhere,” Andrew said. “That’s why we need students to help and report things fast.”
If vandalism keeps happening, the school could implement stricter rules, such as tighter hall passes or more bathroom checks. “It’s expensive,” they said. “This is your parents’ money. We all need to take care of the school.”
The broken bathroom will reopen once the new sink and door are installed. The school hopes students will respect school property and speak up if they see vandalism happen. “Why would you want to vandalize it?”, Yawn Said. “It’s a nice school. It’s a nice place to be.”
