Midvale, UT — Dr. Tyler Oliphant stands out for his kind demeanor and great patience with students. He has taught math for seven years and loves teaching it.
Dr. Oliphant originally wasn’t a math teacher; he instead got his doctorate in classical music, more directly opera, but he decided to become a math teacher for two reasons: “I really like helping people with things they don’t understand and how those things work. And really, I just like hanging out with my students.”
Dr. Oliphant teaches strictly tenth-grade math this year, but has taught at many other institutions. He stated that he has taught at the community college, middle schools, and has even substituted. He also taught music at Salt Lake Community College for a time.
In addition to being a teacher, he has many different hobbies, with one of his main hobbies being singing opera, for which he has performed many concerts and solos at various venues.
He stated that he has done work with “Utah Opera, Utah Symphony, I have also worked at the Choir at Temple Square as a soloist, and I have been on the Sunday Music in the Spoken Word broadcast twice, and I also have performed at Hale Center Theater.”
He has performed at many other highly regarded places. He also worked with the Madeleine Choir School for many years, working in the Cathedral of the Madeleine. He worked there until 2022.
Another one of Dr. Oliphant’s hobbies is games. He said in his free time he often plays Hearthstone, which is a digital card game. He also advises the Game Club that meets in his room, A333, every Wednesday from 2:30–4:00, where they play various games such as card games and role-playing games.
