MIDVALE, UT- Alex Skorut, a star student at Hillcrest High School, has been elected the Student Body Officer (SBO) President for the 2025-2026 school year. Skorut has liked being the SBO president, saying that “I’ve really enjoyed it… it’s a lot of work, but it’s very productive and makes me feel very satisfied with all of the work and hours I have to put in.”
Skorut was elected president at the end of the last school year after a successful campaign. When asked why he decided to run for Student Body Officer, Skorut said that the actions of his siblings inspired him. According to Skorut, “My brother was SBO 10 years ago and he convinced me to try it… I figured I’d shoot my shot and I ended up winning, which was awesome.” Although Skorut enjoys being an SBO, it does come with some extra work.
The sorts of things that Skorut is required to do include “small daily tasks like hanging up the News on the Loo every week, making posters for events that are coming up… and bigger things that we have to plan, like Winter Formal and all of the assemblies which take a ton of work.”
A full IB student, Skorut has to balance his hobbies, extracurricular activities (like swimming, for which he is a part of Hillcrest’s swim team) , and schoolwork with the responsibilities that come with being the SBO president. Skorut said that he “was definitely at school a lot longer than I have been in the past, which sometimes makes it harder to get all my homework done because I’m always busy with something else.”
Despite this, Skorut thought that being an SBO was actually beneficial to his coursework and life in general. Skorut went on to say that “I feel like being an SBO has given me the opportunity to focus a lot more on school- I have to actually lock in a lot more now, versus just getting whatever done in my free time whenever I have a few hours to kill, and now I have to schedule and dedicate myself to a few hours per day consistently… I think I’ve actually improved in my academic abilities.”
To wrap up the interview, Skorut had some important advice for the incoming freshman- “to put yourself out there.”
According to Skorut, “In my freshman year, I felt like all the cool kids were nonchalant- the people who didn’t really care about school, they didn’t care about being hype or going to any sports events or anything like that… but as I went through high school, I learned that it’s actually not cool to not care- it’s pretty cool to care, and it shows that you’re a real person, versus a blank slate that has nothing special about you.”
Ultimately, Skorut described himself as “charismatic”, which he defines as “not being afraid to embarrass myself, which I think is helpful when it comes to getting people excited for
assemblies.” These things make Skorut not only an incredible Student Body Officer, but also an exemplary member of the student body itself.
