Dance Co was a part of the winter showcase held on Dec. 17 from 7–9 p.m. in the auditorium. President Ella Cox has been on the team since her freshman year. Dance Company’s theme this year is “Camaraderie” to symbolize friendship, connection, cooperation, and respect.
As the president of Dance Co, Cox’ job is to assist their director, Chelsea Lujan, in any way that she can. Cox helps make dances cleaner and helps everyone by making sure they understand and know the dances. “During actual performances I make sure that everything is going well backstage and in the dressing room,” Cox says.
While incorporating their theme into their dance, they start and end the dance in a hug. “We connect through shapes and are able to build trust with each other throughout the dance,” stated Cox.
Dance Co has been preparing “Camaraderie” since August. Cox and her fellow officers choreographed the dance back in July; however, all of their other dances were started in December, which led to all members of Dance Co working together to make everything look presentable.
Everyone on Dance Co is a part of the dance. Cox, as well as her fellow officers Clarissa Yeoman, Ella Hobson, and Skye Welker, all choreograph it so that they know how everything will work before they start working on it with the rest of the company. “It was mostly just trial and error until we liked what we had and felt that it represented our theme,” Cox shared.
When preparing for dances, Dance Co has a couple of ways that they go about it. They warm up together, do costume and makeup together, and go over dances. “Then, my favorite part, we get in a circle holding pinkies, the officers give a little pep talk to hype everyone up and then we huddle up and say ‘DC MUCH LOVE!’.”
