MIDVALE, Utah — With tryouts just around the corner, Hillcrest volleyball players are already hitting the court, sharpening their skills, and building team chemistry for what they hope will be a strong season.
“I’ve been training by going to open gyms and playing with my church on Sundays,” said returning player Elijah John, who’s eager for the season to start.
Open gyms have been drawing large crowds of people who want a head start before tryouts.
“The last time I was there, there were like 20 people, probably 30, maybe even 40,” Eli said with a smile. “That was a good amount.”
Coaches have also been playing a big role in helping players grow; they’ve been focusing on providing the basics and building teamwork among both new and returning athletes. “They’re helping us train by teaching the younger kids how to serve,” explained Ariola Santos. “They also run drills that help us with digging and other position skills.”
Both players and coaches agree that open gyms make a big difference when it comes to confidence and preparation. “I think open gyms help you before tryouts because it’s basically a practice,” Eli said. “People are free to come without pressure, but it still gets you ready for what’s coming.”
Players say the best way to get more students involved is simply to spread the word. “People should just invite their friends and tell others instead of being quiet,” he suggested.
With strong attendance and growing excitement, Hillcrest volleyball looks ready to serve up another great season.
