Midvale, UT — The Hillcrest High School girls’ basketball team is heading to St. George this weekend. After having a rough start to their season, the team is traveling south in hopes of securing their first win and improving their game. Although they haven’t won any games so far, these girls have taken each of those losses as a learning experience and are determined to apply that knowledge to future games.
To prepare for facing Hurricane and Payson, the girls’ basketball team is engaging in scouting. Emily Mandel, a senior on the team, describes the preparation, “We watch their film, and we scout each player and the team overall.”
After analyzing their opponents’ defense, the Huskies now have a strong grasp of what they are up against, allowing them to modify their offense so that they can play with the best execution.
From what the team has seen, Payson and Hurricane are proficient teams. “Payson is really, really good,” acknowledged Josie Haddock. Both opposing teams feature players who are “long and tall,” giving them a clear physical advantage.
While this weekend presents a challenge, the Huskies are resolved to focus on their effort. After recently being injured, Mandel says “I just want to play.”
Despite the fact that varsity players Sam Sebahar and Piper Pew cannot make it to the tournament, the team is committed to playing their absolute best regardless of the gap in their roster.
For these girls their main goal is to win and improve their game. A victory would provide a crucial confidence boost for the girls and for Hillcrest, creating a much needed positive outlook on the rest of their season.
